Usha Goswami on Reading Acquisition - Dictionary of Arguments

Slater I 132
Reading Acquisition/Goswami: Learning the alphabet causes fundamental changes in the way that the brain represents whole word sounds, even though the alphabet is a visual code. But equally important is the question of what kinds of brain-based representations for word sounds exist prior to the acquisition of literacy. It seems plausible that the nature of these lexical representations could either facilitate, or inhibit, the acquisition of literacy.
Slater I 133
Differences in how well children can recognize speech, for example by categorizing similarities and differences in the sounds of words, may affect their ability to acquire a visual code for spoken language.
